The island of Rab presents the Rab Archaeological (T)races project, which provides an opportunity to the local population and visitors to familiarise themselves with previously largely unknown cultural heritage, hidden outside the well-known Rab historical centre. Starting with the idea of an open-air museum, in 33 locations and 3 trails (Frux, Capo Fronte and Epario), the project presents the archaeological, religious and ethnographic heritage hidden in untouched landscapes. The presented sites are connected by three educational trails with a total length of about 40 km, spreading over the area of Lopar, Supetarska Draga and Kampor. In addition to well-marked sites and trails intended for walking and cycling, an individual tour of the trails is made easier with the help of a website containing all relevant information, a printed map and other promotional materials that have been produced as part of the project. As a continuation of the initiative developed within the 27 Neighborhoods Flagship, an interactive mobile application was also developed. In an interesting and entertaining way, it aims to bring cultural heritage even closer to visitors, especially children and younger population, as well as the lovers of natural and cultural heritage. The application is available at: https://rabarchaeologicaltraces.com/preuzmi-aplikaciju/

Using an interdisciplinary approach that connects untouched landscapes, archaeology, sports, multimedia and cultural tourism, the project presents specific sites in an innovative way and offers preconditions for recreation that includes the educational component, i.e., active holidays: educational walks, hiking, trekking, cycling, etc. This unique project, whose guiding principle is getting to know one’s cultural heritage, connects heritage, sports and education and promotes the benefits of being outdoors and using one’s free time actively. It is intended for families, outdoors lovers, adventurers, and athletes, and offers the possibility of getting to know some of the most beautiful areas on the island of Rab, where one can, in an untouched landscape, get to know a segment of the rich cultural heritage and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of nature.

The project was launched under the 27 Neighborhoods Flagship (Rijeka 2020 – ECoC) by the Lopar Culture Centre, Pučko otvoreno učilište Rab, the Rab Tourist Board and the Lopar Tourist Board. Its realisation would not have been possible without the professional help of partners – the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta (Heritage Malta) – and financial support primarily from the City of Rab and the Municipality of Lopar as well as Rijeka 2020.

The Rab Archaeological (T)races project presents, in a comprehensive and unique way, the island’s archaeological heritage (prehistoric hillforts, Roman countryside villas called villa rustica, ancient shipwrecks, etc.), religious heritage (remains of early Christian and medieval churches) and ethnographic heritage (dry-stone walls, lime kilns, etc.), dating from prehistoric times to the 20th century.
